Practise your listening comprehension skills by listening to recordings, after which you should check the answers and the transcript. You should not read the transcript as you listen to the recording. Remember, in a real exam, you will not have access to the transcript. At the end of each test you will find a “vocabulary file” that aims to help you better understand the texts and their vocabulary. It does not serve as a dictionary, as it only features words in the meaning in which they are actually used in the given text. After the vocabulary file you will also find ‘do it yourself’ tasks for practice purposes. The answer keys are to be found at the end of the book. There were two slight changes in the regulations for orals exams in 2015, and the present book takes them into consideration. The first is that oral exams are no longer allowed to be taken alone, so if there is an odd number of candidates, the exam will be taken in threes. The second modification (only in Hungary) is that at the beginning of their exam, candidates pick a card that has  a number on it, and that number determines their exam topics for both the guided conversation and the picture based task. With the help of this book, you will be able to familiarise yourself with the tasks and procedures as well as the assessment criteria. The book also includes five colour photomontages which are part of the oral exam.A favourable change on the ECL language exam from the December 2016 exam period: Result calculation at the ECL exam has changed in favour of the examinees. It is no longer a requirement to achieve 60% at both the written and at the oral exam but it is enough to achieve an average 60% including all 4 skills if the candidate reaches at least 40% of the total score in each skill. Thus it is possible to compensate weaker performance on one skill with one or more better results achieved on (an)other skill(s). E.g. 45% achieved on any skill + 60% achieved on any skill + 60% achieved on any skill + 75% achieved on any skill = 60% = a successful complex exam. This change has been in effect since the December 2016 exam period and is not valid retroactively. The new way of result calculation is valid for a complex exam completed within one exam period only and it cannot be validated for partial exams (written exam or oral exam) completed in different exam periods. The topic task material published in each test is photocopiable. A teacher can photocopy the tasks pages for all of the students that they teach. A language school or department must purchase a book for each teacher wanting to use the tasks in their lessons. The licence to photocopy this material only allows for one teacher to have permission to photocopy the topic tasks pages of their book, but only for the students/classes that each teacher teaches. We hope that you will use this book in your language centre, but please ensure that a ‘one teacher, one book’ policy is maintained. We are delighted that over the past several years many people have found our books helpful. We have received a lot of positive feedback from both teachers and learners. We are pleased that all the work invested in these books has proved worthwhile to those who have used them for their ECL exam preparation.
